Advent For the Family

December 7, 2012

It's Friday!

Begin by lighting the first purple candle on the wreath. Be sure and light the same candle as you did last evening.

Christmas Carol:

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Said the night wind to the little lamb,
"Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite,
With a tail as big as a kite."

Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
"Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the the sea,
With a voice as big as the the sea."

Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
"Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold--
Let us bring him silver and gold,
Let us bring him silver and gold."

Said the king to the people everywhere,
"Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere,
Listen to what I say!
The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light,
He will bring us goodness and light."

Bible Reading:

Deuteronomy 18

15 The LORD your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your own brothers. You must listen to him. 16 For this is what you asked of the LORD your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly when you said, "Let us not hear the voice of the LORD our God nor see this great fire anymore, or we will die." 17 The LORD said to me: "What they say is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers; I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. 19 If anyone does not listen to my words that the prophet speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account.

Activity: Pinecone Ornaments This week my own two kids and I went into the woods and gathered pinecones (they don't have to be large). We spray painted some gold, some silver, and some we sprayed with clear sealer and while still wet we sprinkled glitter on liberally, then sprayed again with clear sealer. This should be done in a well ventilated space, needless to say, but they love to press the spray button. (My kids are 2 1/2 and 5). You could do a similar craft having them paint the pinecones by hand with gold or silver paint, or dabbing glue on the cones and sprinkling with glitter. When the cones are dry, tie a beatiful ribbon around the top (ones that still have a bit of stem attached at the top work best), and you have a very nice ornament for the tree.

Recipe Idea: Peanut Butter Graham Cracker Bears

Bake these bears for the kids - they will enjoy helping make the bear shapes

Ingredients

1/2 cup peanut butter
1/4 cup margarine or butter
1/4 cup shortening
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1 egg
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
1 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup finely crushed graham crackers (7 cracker squares)
Miniature semisweet chocolate pieces
Frosting (optional)

Beat peanut butter, margarine or butter, and shortening in a large mixing bowl with an electric mixer on medium to high speed for 30 seconds. Add granulated sugar, brown sugar, and baking soda; beat till combined. Beat in egg and vanilla. Beat in as much of the flour and cracker crumbs as you can with the mixer on medium speed, scraping sides of bowl occasionally. Stir in any remaining flour and crumbs with a wooden spoon. For each bear cookie, shape some of the dough into on 1 1/4 inch ball (for body), one 3/4 inch ball (for head), three balls slightly smaller than 1/4 inch (for nose and ears), two 1 1/2 x 1/2 inch logs (for arms), and two 1 1/4 x 3/4 inch logs (for legs). Decorate bears before baking by pressing in chocolate pieces for eyes and paws. Bake in a 325 degree oven for 15 to 18 minutes or till edges are lightly browned. Makes about 20.

Closing Prayer: It's Friday evening! WHEW! Have you had a long week and are you glad to be relaxing? Friday night is a good night to designate as "Family Night." Keep this tradition all year and not just during Christmas. Pop some popcorn, rent a movie or play board games. The important thing is to spend time together as a family. Close your family night with prayer.

End with a GIANT GROUP HUG!
