Vocabulary
Caravel - a small Spanish or
Portuguese sailing vessel of the Middle Ages and later, usually
lateen-rigged on two or three masts.
Topsail - A square sail set above the
lowest sail on the mast of a square-rigged ship. A triangular or square
sail set above the gaff of a lower sail on a fore-and-aft-rigged ship.
King Ferdinand - the king of Castile and Aragon who
ruled jointly with his wife Isabella; his marriage to Isabella I in 1469
marked the beginning of the modern state of Spain and their capture of
Granada from the Moors in 1492 united Spain as one country; they instituted
the Spanish Inquisition in 1478 and supported the expedition of Christopher
Columbus in 1492 (1452-1516)
Deckhand - a member of a ship's crew
who performs manual labor
Queen Isabella - the queen of
Castile whose marriage to Ferdinand of Aragon in 1469 marked the beginning
of the modern state of Spain; they instituted the Spanish Inquisition in
1478 and sponsored the voyages of Christopher Columbus in 1492 (1451-1504)
Cargo - The freight carried by a
ship, an aircraft, or another vehicle.
New World - A name for the Americas,
especially during the time of first exploration and colonization of the
Americas by Europeans.
Nautical - Nautical A tall
vertical spar, sometimes sectioned, that rises from the keel or deck of a
sailing vessel to support the sails and the standing and running rigging.
Seaport - A harbor or town having facilities
for seagoing ships.
